His Imperial Highness Prince Ermias Sahle-Selassie Haile-Selassie, President of the Crown Council of Ethiopia, has expressed his great sadness at the passing of Simon Isaacs, the 4th Marquess of Reading. Lord Reading served as a lieutenant in the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards from 1961 to 1964 and later worked as a stockbroker from 1964 to 1974 and was a member of the London Stock Exchange from 1970 to 1974. He then served in many distinguished positions in the business world.
Lord Reading was a great friend of Ethiopia and an advocate of Christian-Jewish dialog, and was very active in important humanitarian efforts such as the Barnabas Fund, the Global Flying Hospitals and CURE International. His Lordship was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Menelik II by the Crown Council of Ethiopia for the many charitable works he conducted in Ethiopia, and he was a regular attendee of the “Victory of Gondar Dinners” held by the institutions of the Ethiopian Crown in London. Lord Reading was very knowledgeable about Ethiopia and had a great interest in her history and a love for her culture and traditions. His charitable efforts in Ethiopia were rooted in his great respect and love for the country and its people.
The Crown Council of Ethiopia conveys its most sincere sympathies to His Lordship Julian Michael Rufus Isaacs, 5th Marquess of Reading, to the Dowager Marchioness of Reading and the entire Isaacs family.
